Publisher's Synopsis

It was a hot, dusty, unpleasant July day. I was driving across the western deserts of México in a stolen car reflecting on how this current adventure might end. The developments that led me to be on that highway while unexpected, were oddly not unusual. The road was bumpy, and I kept thinking I should have checked the trunk before leaving. It turns out I should have.

The book is a collection of stories about México, Texas and other parts of Latin America designed to amuse rather than necessarily inform the reader. They occurred over a period of almost 50 years beginning in early 1970's. They are also about how seemingly small decisions can have a major impact on the direction of one's life.

Robert Downes is a retired Senior Foreign Service Office with over 37 years of federal service, the majority served overseas with the U.S. State Department. He lived and worked in Australia, Germany, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Thailand, and Venezuela as well as studying in Austria, Germany, and Hungary. After leaving the State Department he returned to his native Texas where he fills his time reading, writing, kayaking, and volunteering for local charities and international organizations.
