For many people, participating in therapy or a Counseling group equals weakness. I say it's a sign of bravery. What counseling does for those who are brave enough to face their fears and their past is give them a new chance at life-as long as they are willing to try. When an experience has deeply wounded us, the images associated with that experience, along with the emotions we felt at that time like fear, anxiety, hopelessness, rejection, worthlessness, or not belonging-are forever attached to these images. This can create unconscious deadly thinking which takes over and structures our entire world. And since our bodies believe every word stored in our minds, we experience debilitating physical symptoms and sensations. Yet, when people go to a therapist, they don't usually come in declaring, "I need help because my father didn't love me as a kid." They come in seeking help because of something in the present. They recognize that what they're feeling, thinking or doing in the present is hurting themselves and their relationships.
