Publisher's Synopsis
Histories of Europe in this period abound. Most, however, on closer inspection turn out not to be histories of 'Europe' at all, but aggregates of national histories of the leading European powers. Analysis usually concentrates on nation-states and their inter-relations. The justification for a new history is that it breaks free from this traditional historiographical mould and provides an approach that is genuinely European in it conceptualisation.
