Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Euripides: Translated Into English Rhyming Verse by Gilbert Murray, M. A., LL. D

I have taken first two plays of Euripides the Hippolytus and T/ze Baccfiae - chosen partly for their beauty, partly because they are very characteristic of their author. Different as they are, both are peculiarly imbued with his special atmosphere, an atmosphere of creativeness steeped in critical meditation, of Fiction that exists for the sake of Truth - sometimes to ex press Truth, sometimes consciously to ?y from Truth, but always in some way intimately conditioned by the search for it.
