Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Eulogy on the Life and Character of the Late Daniel Webster
There is nothing more interesting or instructive than the lives of men who have played important and distinguished parts in the drama of nations. The lives of such, when they have been wise and virtuous - their aims high and noble, afford examples which challenge the approval of all, while they excite the emu lation of, at least, a few.
Such examples are the moral salt of the world. They give to it a wholesome and purifying savor, that preserves it from the decay and corruption into which it would otherwise more speed ily fall. Whilst such men live, their wisdom is a light shining out amidst the darkness of ignorance, prejudice and error, show ing the way that leads to happiness, prosperity and safety and when they die, their example survives to stimulate posterity to walk in their paths.
