Marie-Th?r?se d?Alverny is acknowledged one of the formative influences on the study of the thought and culture of the medieval west. This selection of articles, classics in their field, explores the fertile interrelations between Neoplatonic cosmology and classical and biblical imagery in the Middle Ages, using the evidence of manuscript illuminations, mosaics and texts (most edited for the first time). The Goddess Wisdom and her seven daughters provided a powerful visual allegory for the seven liberal arts, and hence for the syllabus of medieval education, but man himself, as microcosm, provided a symbol for the whole universe.
