Publisher's Synopsis
This book is intended to draw readers' attention to what modern tragedy signifies in light of Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman because the author holds that it is indispensable for them to have the right comprehension of tragedy, hence of the truth of human conditions and of human greatness. As one of literary forms, tragedy inevitably varies with the times. Nevertheless, tragic vision remains in the sense that all tragedies give expression to the tragic essence of humankind. Accordingly, this book lays emphasis on not only why modern tragedy exists, but its characteristics. On the one hand, modern tragic vision is in conformity to the classical view of human life, which gives proof to the validity of modern tragedy; on the other, the change of times requires its modern qualities.
