For after that, in the wisdom of God, the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God, by (what was reckoned) the foolishness of preaching, to save them that believe.

How much also on the state of public teaching de pends the benefit which we derive from other divine ordinances. The propriety and fervour of our pray ers to God, our delight and animation in the singing of his praise, and our discernment and consolation in showing forth the Lord's death. As well as our general regard to the commandments of God, will ordinarily correspond to the measure of spiritual understanding and enjoyment which he is pleased to impart to us by means of public teaching. Take heed unto thyself and unto thy doctrine continue in them: for in do ing this, thou shalt both save thyself, and them that bear thee.
