Publisher's Synopsis

Essay from the year 2016 in the subject History - Basics, Brunel University, course: Master of Intelligence and Security Studies, language: English, abstract: The epistemological limitations of history have not stopped the continued efforts to capture lessons learned from the past and adopt them in intelligence. Sir Winston Churchill said, "The farther backward you look, the farther forward you are likely to see" (quoted in Ian Morris, Why The West Rule For Now). Churchill's notion on history offers a key insight into the purpose of history, i.e., foresight, which has significant bearing in intelligence analysis. There are, however, some caveats to using history in intelligence. They include history being limited by inadequate sources; history being subject to multiple interpretations; history lacking objective reality, and history being prone to political motivation.
