Publisher's Synopsis

Concomitantly with the great advances made in genetic markers in diabetes, it has been observed that the incidence of diabetes in general, and of childhood diabetes in particular, seems to be on the increase but differs markedly among various populations. This volume brings up-to-date knowledge of the factors that interact in the etiology of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) from an epidemiological perspective. An exhaustive collection of data from the network of IDDM incidence studies around the world is presented and the role of the HLA system in the genesis of IDDM is emphasized. In addition, the question of IDDM screening in families and normal populations is approached not only from a methodological and statistical point of view, but also from an ethical perspective.
