Publisher's Synopsis
If Protestantism has any desire to remain somehow compatible with an increasingly secular society, it would do well to reflect on its liberal traditions. Such a tradition provides theological insight, critical questions, and methodological approaches for our times. This volume is an attempt to reintroduce these traditions afresh. The volume combines studies about some of the great philosophical and theological thinkers within the liberal and enlightenment traditions of Protestantism. Thinkers such as Immanuel Kant, David Friedrich Strauss, Albert Schweitzer, and Rudolf Bultmann all make appearances. Their thoughts are first examined in their own context and then brought forward within a constructive discussion of our current moment. Moreover, this volume attempts to bring a new perspective to foundational theological themes - e. g., the plausibility of speech about God; the question of universal revelation; the relationship between faith and reason; and questions of death and eternal life - while developing new and fresh proposals for an enlightened Protestantism for our current times.
