Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from English Metrical Homilies: From Manuscripts of the Fourteenth Century

It can hardly be fuppofed that this collection of fermons was written with the view of its being ufed as a fervice book of the Church, yetthe Rubric inferted after the Latin poem on the Signa ante Judicium, page 27, feems to imply that the Sermons were intended to be read to the people. This Latin poem (which is wanting in the other mss.) is' ordered to be omitted by the preacher, quando legit Anglicum coram laycis. The fermons may, however, have been intended to be read to the people after the regular fervices of the Church were concluded; and the fingular tales or narrations, which indicate the rude fim plicity of the age, feem to have been introduced more effectually to fix the attention of the audience. It is well known that the moff celebrated popular preachers in mediaeval times fhowed a tendency to excite laughter in its turn as well as other emotions.
