Publisher's Synopsis

"English: An Integrated Approach" is a course integrating language and literature, and designed especially for students in Kenyan secondary schools. The course draws on current developments from the field of teaching English as a second language. It integrates the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, teaches grammar in context, uses a wide variety of texts and involves the students in an interactive way.;Each of the 18 units of "Students' Book 1" offers opportunities for students to explore two written texts, a listening text and texts for speaking aloud (poetry, drama and role-play). The texts are thematically integrated, as is the language work on structure, sounds and vocabulary.;This accompanying teacher's book provides answers to the exercises (where appropriate) and suggestions as to how the activities might be handled. Some optional extra activities and a glossary of grammatical terms which appear in the students' book are also included.;A particular feature of the course is the structured teaching of writing. This includes controlled writing based on model paragraphs and a step-by-step plan introducing students to the principles of expository writing and free creative writing.;In all parts of the course students are encouraged to take an active part in the learning process.
