Publisher's Synopsis

Buildings use about half the energy consumed by industrialised countries. Energy efficiency is therefore no longer an optional extra in building design. Both owners and developers are now aware of the significant cost savings that can be made in the running and maintenance of buildings through good energy design, and there is also a growing awareness of the environmental pressures to save energy. Legislation is likely to increase this trend. However, so far much of the information available to the designer and specifier has been highly technical and not readily accessible to the non–specialist. This book aims to fill the knowledge "gap". Written by a team of experts from a range of disciplines, it covers a wide number of topics relating to energy efficient design. It deals with the subject in four main sections – the indoor environment, the building envelope, housing and non–domestic buildings – and includes a number of case studies. It will be invaluable to architects, building services engineers, cost consultants, researchers and teachers.
