Publisher's Synopsis
The theme of this block is how to design products not to fail. Part 1 looks at Corrosion - The Mothman Cometh, which introduces corrosion - in terms of what it is and how it is caused, illustrates ways in which it can occur and shows ways of reducing or preventing corrosion. Part 2, Structures and Microstructures, introduces how materials are built up at the atomic level, shows the differences in fundamental structure between metals, ceramics and polymers and explains how the underlying structure can affect a material's macroscopic properties. Part 3, Materials for Strength, explains ways in which materials can be engineered to have improved strength, relates these improvements to mechanisms on the atomic or microstructural levels and gives specific examples of strengthening mechanisms in metals, ceramics and polymers.
