Publisher's Synopsis

The Commission on Citizenship is an all-Party body whose members are drawn from all walks of public life. In their report they consider what is meant by citizenship and how this applies to the public institutions of our society and the great range of voluntary bodies and independent associations, and above all, to individual citizens of all ages. The Commission sees citizenship as one of the most important concepts of modern political struggle and social development. Their series of recommendations includes incorporating the learning of citizenship within the national education curriculum and the setting up of a major review and codification of the law relating to the legal rights, duties and entitlements of citizens in the UK. Several recommendations refer to community activity and involvement by individuals, statutory and voluntary bodies and employers.
