A loving and hard-working child, Emily goes into service when she is twelve at the house of Roger Francis, who has surprising connections with Emily's own family. When Emily moves to another household she finds that her new employer's son Hugo is to marry Roger's daughter, Deborah. But Hugo dishonours and betrays Emily to such an extent that she is imprisoned, tried and deported to Australia.
