NAEYC publishes research-based, peer-reviewed books for early childhood educators. The unifying thread of this collection of math-related topics is that they are told from the perspective of an early childhood education teacher who initially was nervous about her ability to teach math to young children and her journey to becoming a more confident teacher of math. The heart of this book very much focuses on helping teachers feel less intimidated by the concept of teaching math so that they can in turn make children feel less intimidated and even excited to learn math. Each article offers insight into some way the author taps into the funds of knowledge that the children bring to the classroom and that she herself brings and how to look at those collective skills and experiences through a math lens. Readers can see a teacher joyfully embracing math as she develops math learning activities that address important math concepts and also connect to many other subject areas (outdoor play, the arts, nature, coding). She shows how she has engaged in her own math learning journey along with the children.
