Bookseller Notes
First published in Amsterdam in 1761 (and placed on the Index), with 3 editions in English in the same year (2 in London, 1 in Dublin). Given the enormous popularity of the book, it is rather surprising that nearly 40 years should elapse before a transatlantic edition. There are no copies of this edition recorded in UK libraries. Arthur Schopenhauer cited Julie, or the New Heloise as one of the four greatest novels ever written, along with Tristram Shandy, Wilhelm Meister, and Don Quixote. All things considered (date and place of printing, subscription library) this is quite a good copy. The Library label is signed off by Benjamin Franklin Edmands.
