The author does a great job of letting us feel as though we are tagging along right beside him as he takes Elliot for his walks around the neighborhood. It is while on these almost daily journeys that we watch Elliot face his fears (there are many), fall in love (more than once), recover from injuries (some emotional as well as physical) forgive others who've hurt him, and sometimes even forget them. We don't really learn too much about Greg's life before he met Elliot, but he writes in such a way that you know he is relating to the dog on a personal level when it comes to the fear, the love, the pain, the healing and the forgiveness. Oh! AND THE HUMOR! I couldn't wait to read this book after watching my sister chuckle out loud several times while she was reading it beside me poolside. She's a dog lover and could totally relate to the descriptions of Elliot's expressions and reactions to things in life. I can honestly say that I found myself chuckling too...and not only at Elliot...but at Greg and HIS 'human' antics! One of my favorite things about this book is that the author writes down the things that Elliot 'says' to him. In fact, I have highlighted several of Elliot's quotes in my Kindle, just so I could go back and remind myself of the wisdom shared by that loving and smelly dog. Keep a highlighter handy if you're reading a hard copy. What a guy!
