Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Elizabethan Minor Epics: Edited With Introduction

Having shot a bolt in 1589 at the 'ragged Rimes' that were being 'slubberd up, ' Thomas Nashe took care to explain that poetry is a 'hidden 8: divine kinde of Philosophy' and that 'the fables of Poets must of necessitie be fraught with wisedome 8: knowledge.' This 'hieratic' View of poetry obviously had particular appeal for the deep and searching wits of the period. But we may wonder whether the general cultivated reader (in contrast to the 'simple sort' whom Golding had ad dressed) did not, like the oft-cited bee, speed, unerring, to the sweetest honey among the bitter ?owers and sharp nettles. For Nashe too mocks the 'mis-interpreting' of 'this moralizing age'
