That issue however was the result of the sober sense of the citizens of both countries, and the Addresses were one of the most concrete expressions of the deeper feelings of all true Englishmen and Americans. It was quite like Mr. Burritt to take this indirect but still powerful weapon of human sentiment to effect national politics. He believed in the power of the ideal.
