This text-book in Mental Science is designed to be a compact but comprehensive presentation of the facts of the human mind in scientific method and form. The science is treated as one of observation, not of speculation. Little space accordingly is given to metaphysical discussions. The design is rather to prepare the beginner in mental studies for an appreciative understanding of the history of philosophic thought in the past and of the speculations and discussions in this field of investigation at the present, as he may prosecute these studies in the lecture-room or in private reading.
The science is carefully defined in its proper province and comprehension, and is mapped out into departments that are determined by lines of demarkation appearing in the nature of the mind, so that the treatment may be recognized as exact, orderly, and exhaustive.
