Publisher's Synopsis
Chemistry is the science that studies the composition and changes in composition of the substances around us. Biological chemistry is the study of chemical processes within and relating to living organisms. It is closely related to molecular biology, the study of the molecular mechanisms by which genetic information encoded in DNA is able to result in the processes of life. The text Elements of General and Biological Chemistry explains recent advances in biological chemistry. First chapter reviews the chemistry and biological activities of secondary metabolites from marine isolates. Second chapter aims to review the scientific findings and research reported to date on MS that prove many of the remarkable various biological actions, effects and some uses of species as a source of bioactive natural compound. In third chapter, recent studies on the novel biological activities of allosamidins have been reviewed. Fourth chapter focuses on biological activities of hydrazone derivatives. The purpose of fifth chapter is to synthesize novel N-(6-arylbenzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)acetamides employing the Pd(0)-catalyzed Suzuki cross coupling methodology. In sixth chapter, we present a survey of several aromatic plants used in traditional medicine in Yemen, their traditional uses, their volatile chemical compositions, and their biological activities. Seventh chapter reviews on the chemical and toxicological properties of depleted and natural uranium and some of the possible consequences from long term, low dose exposure to depleted uranium in the environment. In eighth chapter, a series of novel glycol-clusters containing sulfonated N-acetyl-D-glucosamine (GlcNAc) have been synthesized using click chemistry. Last chapter summarizes recent studies on the chemistry of radiation-induced ROS/RNS generation and emphasizes interactions between ROS and RNS and the relative roles of cellular ROS/RNS generators as amplifiers of the initial ionization events. Cellular mechanisms for regulating ROS/RNS levels are discussed.
