Edf's system of nuclear power generation is based on the premise that by having many plants of the same size and basic design, knowledge of how such big machines work efficiently and safely can more easily be accumulated over time. This knowledge can identify and solve generic problems so that the uncertainties in running such machines can be reduced. Since nuclear power plants are designed on the basis of known technical and regulated systems, periodic inspections can be made on various system components through measuring and/or calibrating tangible characteristics.
