Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from El Palacio, Vol. 14: June 1, 1923

Waiting for them at the little shrine on the brink of the sacred cenote were the priests, the dignitaries of the state and throngs of the pious. At a signal in the ceremony, designed for the deity who was credited with power in the particular emergency, the devotees flung down their most valuable articles of personal adorn ment and other art treasures. Then the white robed priests hurled the human sac rifices into the yawning water pit, the maidens having been mercifully drugged with the sacred ambrosia, balche.
