Éste segundo volumen del Barón La Croix da continuación a los episodios anteriores, aquí se despejan las incógnitas planteadas desde el primer volumen. La novela que en esta ocasión nos propone Eddy Báez como lectura, toma de contexto uno de los períodos más fértiles para contar historias, reales o ficticias, del devenir reciente de Cuba: la lucha insurreccional contra la dictadura de Fulgencio Batista entre diciembre de 1956 y enero de 1959. Pero aquí el contexto es solo eso; por tanto, usted no se enfrentará a una novela tardía sobre el período de lucha armada de la Revolución, que cada vez son un producto más extraño en las producciones literarias de la isla, sino a una narración hiperbólica y próxima a los códigos semióticos de lo real maravilloso, subgénero literario, que en el caso cubano, le debemos a Alejo Carpentier.
Los personajes se construyen y caracterizan según los prototipos que éste subgénero de nuestra literatura ha ido conformando en más de 70 años de haberse definido por primera vez como categoría literaria y como hacer en el arte y la narrativa caribeña, y por extensión, latinoamericana, por cierto, un tanto diferente del llamado realismo mágico, anterior en el tiempo como hacer estético de éstas tierras, pero convertido en boom estilístico para Europa y otras partes del mundo a partir de los 60. Los personajes de El Barón La Croix se mueven entre lo insólito y lo creíble, si partimos del presupuesto que en nuestros mundos, ¡mucho de lo acaecido parece a los ojos de otros como imposibles!
Hay seres diabólicos con "poderes sobrenaturales", comunidades humanas con prácticas religiosas y estructuración de sus modos de vida, típicos del estadio tribal de la evolución humana, prototipos de doncellas de la Baja Edad Media, trasmutadas a personajes de radionovelas de décadas pasadas, con las soñaron nuestras abuelas; con grácil figura y abolengo criollo, campesinos dignificados por las miradas de rebeldes citadinos, con excelsas formaciones académicas. Y con la prestancia y la verborrea de playboys de clase media con prestigio de docto universitario, y una pléyade de otros personajes con orígenes socioeconómicos y destinos dramáticos, que se mueven entre el amor y el desamor, el terror y el misterio, la lucha y la traición, todo ello girando alrededor de la "historia" y los delirios del inteligible Barón La Croix, una simbiosis del paroxismo medieval tardío y las alucinaciones que devolvió la estrábica modernidad caribeña.
