Publisher's Synopsis

Denis Lawton was Director of the Institute of Education, University of London from 1983 to 1989, and has held many other positions of distinction within education during his long career. His books have profoundly influenced two generations of teachers and education academics. This collection of essays honours Denis Lawton's contribution to education theory and practice, reflecting the many scholarly dimensions of his work. Included are studies in the politics of education, education policy, history of education, social theory and education, and the interrelated 'educational commonplaces' of school, curriculum, pedagogy and assessment. Introduced by an overview of Denis Lawton's work, and concluding with an interview with the subject himself, the essays pay tribute to his work in different ways. Some launch straight into an independent study or theoretical development in one of his many areas of interest. Others highlight a facet of his work, taking a cue from it to develop an argument further or differently, or focus more fixedly on a part of his work to critique a position, evaluate his influence on policy, or offer an observation on his founder's role in curriculum studies. Together, they constitute an impressive commentary on a formidable oeuvre.
