The interrelationships among rates of material cycling through both benthic and water column communities play an important role in the ultimate fate of inorganic nutrients and organic matter within coastal ecosystems. The coupling of benthic and pelagic processes contributes to elevated rates of primary productivity in coastal ecosystems by recycling nutrients in the water column and across the sediment-water interface.
