Publisher's Synopsis
This is part of a two volume work which provides a comprehensive survey of the biology and ecology of all elements in the soil community, synthesising a range of scattered information, giving a broad treatment of the ecology of soil communities in different soil types in different parts of the world. It fills a gap in soil animal ecology, adopting an approach which reflects the changing pattern of ecological studies, with particular emphasis on the synthesis of quantitative information.;The book has been divided into two volumes to take account of the expansion to its first edition (McGraw Hill, 1973). This second edition incorporates new material on the effects of water, covers hot deserts and calcification, industrial and disturbed soils, and new schemes of classification for soils and profiles. The sectional format is retained, but topics are brought completely up to date, with new information on industrial reclamation sites, bauxite mines, deserts and the Antarctic. Some sections have been moved or deleted to make way for the most up to date research findings, and essential material therefrom placed elsewhere in the book.
