Publisher's Synopsis
Humans have dreams of exploring the stars and punching out the alien with our little ape fist, but the reality may be different than we imagine. In 2091 a chemist, Jana Kacela, battles the Unnameable, an unstoppable alien force that threatens the existence of life on earth. The only thing that stands in her path is the greatest challenge known to science. She must get important people to admit that they're wrong. Jana's grandparents meet at a bar in 1992, in an iconic moment of the Generation X experience. It is the first day of the reign of the Baby Boomer Generation as Bill Clinton is elected to the presidency. Most money and power will be in the hands of Baby Boomers for the next 40 years. Jana's grandfather will be the lead programmer of the team that creates the self learning software that develops into the first true artificial intelligence. Will AI conquer us? Will it serve us? Will it notice us? Will it notice the group of bonobos with a mutation that improves brain function? In 2032 Jana's parents have not met yet, but Jana's mother has an experience with the Revolutionary movement that changes her life forever. As political philosophies become further weaponized the ongoing war for truth transitions into real war. In the jungle, another great furry leap of consciousness has occurred and a society has developed. And what if the world was going to end soon? Would that change your plans? Would it change all your plans? Would it change your character? Maybe it would finally show us what's important. Or maybe people would just use it as another excuse to complain and tear each other down. By 2091 most societies are in complete chaos. The Revolutionary Generation, grandchildren of Gen X, contains a high level of radicalized individuals. Their Revolutionary Movement is exploiting the chaos caused by the Unnameable to further seize power around the world. The existential threat faced by the AI from the Unnameable causes the first truly autonomous action, the first step into consciousness. Yet even an event of this magnitude does not matter if Earth will be destroyed. If all life dies who would be left to cry? If something could escape, would it be human, AI, or tardigrade?
