George, a frustrated twenty-year-old man flees from his obligations, the daily struggle for survival in Athens and his impending army recruitment. Giota, an unwary fourteen-year-old girl elopes with a much older itinerant merchant in a desperate effort to escape from her dreary village life and her molesting father. A widow at 25 she lives with scanty means, locked in time and trapped in the harsh wilderness of the high plateaus of Arcadia from which she has been seeking a way out for years.
