Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Dürer

There is a portrait of him which shows us just how he looked when he was a schoolboy. Beneath it are written these words, which were added years later This I have drawn from myself from the looking-glass, in the year 1484, when I was still a child. - Albrecht Durer. The boy of thirteen must have possessed a considerable knowledge of drawing, for there is certainly great charm and close study in the deli cate poise of the head and serious look of the eyes. And when I had learnt reading and writing, my father took me from school and taught me the goldsmith's work, Diirer says. This is all we know of his training in the goldsmith's art. He probably worked with his father for two years, and then, as Botticelli had said twenty years before, My inclina tion carried me more towards painting than to the goldsmith's work.
