Diane and Michael made a promise to each other when they were kids. If they were both single by the time they reached 30 then they would get married. But Michael left for the Wild West...They would continue to write each other but sometimes the letters never arrived. Michael learned from a mutual friend that Diane had gotten married, he blocked her from his mind...unwilling but accepting. He would make a fortune in the Gold Rush
