Publisher's Synopsis

This Southern fiction begins during the Great Depression in the Deep South and progresses through World War II. It is about Samantha O'Shea, an illegitimate white baby girl left in the care of a black family by her mother, who died shortly thereafter in an automobile accident. They live on the edge of the Okefenokee Swamp in south Georgia. Once she is discovered by the sheriff and taken away to live with him and his wife, she relates to the reader how hard her new life was, the bigotry and teasing she suffered in school because of her speech, and learning to live white. These were issues she had never dealt with during her childhood in the swamp. There were people who helped her and ones who took advantage of her innocence and naivety. This is a coming-of-age book about the life of a child who grew into a beautiful young woman and reached her independence. There is a sequel. A portion of the first chapter can be found at the back of this book.
