The San Joaquin Valley, California, is one of the most productive agricultural areas in the United States. However, agriculture in large parts of the valley may be adversely affected by high levels of selenium and other soluble trace ele ments that occur in soil, ground water, and agricultural drain water. The occur rence and movement of soluble chemical constituents is related to the movement of ground water in which they are dis solved. Thus, the ground-water flow system must be understood in order to manage these constituents.
