Publisher's Synopsis
The protocols of 488 Politburo meetings held between 1953 and 1960 are a fundamental source for political, ideological, social, economic and cultural developments in the GDR during the post-Stalin era. The subjects covered attest to the unlimited regulatory function of the Politburo. They range from important foreign policy issues such as the GDR's 'Deutschlandpolitik' ('Germany' policy), industry, agriculture, trade, education, culture and Sport, to recipes for making bread. Whilst the early protocols document the SED's development to a "new type of party", this part provides a rich source of material on the denial and marginalization of state authorities by SED committees and the dictatorial rule of Walter Ulbricht.
