Auf diese allgemeine Weise wird sie nämlich als gültig bestätigt. In Analogien, Vergleichen, Gleichnissen, eben in emblematischen Ausdrücken und in allegorischen Bildern wird eigene Erfahrung fassbar - und nur so ist sie auch überindividuell darstellbar, also auch mitteilbar." Kunstvoll geschwungene und verzierte Möbel oder herrschaftliche Residenzen, wie das Königsschloss von Versailles oder das fürstbischöfliche Palais in Würzburg, farbenprächtige Gemälde in den Kirchenkuppeln, wie z.B. in vielen Kirchen Roms oder großformatige Bilder Peter Paul Rubens, Rembrandts und Anton van Dycks mit sinnfrohen Landschafts- und Menschendarstellungen oder die Musik von Johann Sebastian Bach, Georg Friedrich Händel und Antonio Vivaldi gehören u.a. zu den kulturellen Leistungen der Epoche Barock. Getrübt wird jedoch der Blick mit den Gedanken an Armut, Hexenverfolgung und den 30 - jährigen Krieg. Das wirtschaftliche Leben erlahmte, verheerende Seuchen taten ihr Übriges. Kein Wunder, dass der barocke Mensch zwischen Weltverneinung und Weltgenuss schwankte. Umso erstaunlicher ist es, dass in diesem Jahrhundert der politischen und religiösen Unruhen das literarische Schaffen nicht zusammenbrach. Nöte und Sehnsüchte, die Spannung zwischen Lebenslust und Todesangst, zwischen Weltbejahung und Vergänglichkeitsbewusstsein spiegeln sich in der barocken Dichtung wider.
