Dieses Buch beschreibt wie ein Mann durch einen Unfall aus der Bahn geworfen wird, bei dem er den Tod von zwei Kriminellen verursacht. Kurz darauf begegnet er Leuten von der Sekte der Katharer. Das sind Menschen, die die Welt ganz anders sehen, als er es gewohnt ist. Eine große Sehnsucht erwacht in ihm. Er versucht seinen Weg nach Hause zu finden, wobei er immer weniger weiß, was das ist. Immer neue Hindernisse türmen sich vor ihm auf. Nachdem er über eine Stunde durch den Nebel gelaufen war, stand er plötzlich auf dem Gipfel. Er hörte dem Wind eine Weile zu und sah die Wolkenschwaden an sich vorbeiziehen. Die Kälte durchdrang seine Jacke und ließ ihn frösteln. Er spürte eine Einsamkeit, die ihm Angst einflößte. Thomas dachte an die Menschen, die er vor Jahren in Deutschland zurückgelassen hatte. Er vermisste seine Ex-Freundin noch immer, obwohl sie ihn schon vor drei Jahren verlassen hatte. Thomas war danach nach Spanien gegangen, um Abstand zu gewinnen. Aber jetzt in diesem Moment, holte ihn noch einmal dieses Gefühl des Verlassenseins ein. Während er so dastand, näherte sich aus dem weißen Nichts eine Gestalt. Sie trug eine rote Outdoorjacke mit einer Kapuze. Sie blieb in der Nähe stehen und schaute wie er in den Nebel. Dann drehte sie sich zu Thomas herüber. Es war eine junge Frau und sie lächelte ihm zu. "Wo kommst du her?" fragte sie auf Spanisch. "Ich bin Thomas und lebe bei Barcelona..." "Ich bin Sarah." Sie gaben sich die Hand. Sarah nickte und zeigte nach Süden. "Ich komme auch aus Barcelona. Ich suche nach den Katharern. Die sollen hier irgendwo noch immer leben." "Die Katharer, was willst du denn von denen?" "Sie haben noch das Wissen um die alten Mysterien. Sie kennen noch den Weg zum Göttlichen." Sie hatte große dunkle Augen und blickte in den Nebel. "Das Göttliche?" antwortete Thomas stirnrunzelnd, "Ich habe genug damit zu tun, Tag für Tag aufzustehen und meine Arbeit zu machen." Sie sah durch ihn hindurch und nickte. "Dort auf der spanischen Seite machen sie bald ein Portal auf. In den nächsten Tagen. Ich hoffe ich finde sie rechtzeitig." "Ein Portal? Hm, wohin denn?" "In die andere Welt." "Das Paradies etwa? Nicht mehr arbeiten zu müssen, das wäre toll. Aber ich will nicht gleich sterben dafür. Der Himmel kann noch warten, denke ich." Sie machte eine verneinende Geste. "Meine Sehnsucht ist zu groß. Ich will nicht warten und auch nicht sterben. Warum sollte ich auch? Gott ist das Leben selbst. Es muss eine andere Art des Lebens geben. Was hat das mit dem Tod zu tun?" Sie lächelte, nickte Thomas zu, ohne noch auf eine Antwort zu warten, und verschwand im Nebel. Er war sprachlos und versuchte über ihre Worte nachzudenken. Aber sie entglitten ihm. Er bereute nur, sie gehen gelassen zu haben. Er wollte jetzt auf keinen Fall allein sein. So rannte er ihr hinterher. Aber wo war sie? Welche Richtung hatte sie eingeschlagen? Wer sollte sich in dieser milchigen Brühe orientieren! Warum hatte er sich ihr nicht angeschlossen? Aber es war zu spät. Das Leben meinte es nicht gut mit ihm. Da war sie wieder, die Leere. Er irrte herum und dunkel wurde es auch schon! Thomas setzte sich aufs Gras. Sein Mund zuckte, als aus seinen Augen Tränen sprangen. So saß er eine Weile da, versunken in Hoffnungslosigkeit. Vielleicht würde er hier oben übernachten müssen, erfrieren oder auf dem Rückweg abstürzen. Die Mächtigkeit der Berge zermalmte ihn. Gleichgültig wie sie seinem Schicksal gegenüber waren, konnten sie ihn abschütteln wie eine Mücke. Er war nicht Teil von ihnen. Doch plötzlich blies ein sanfter Wind durch die Wolken und trieb sie auseinander. Thomas konnte die Berge um sich erkennen. Aber sie sahen fremd aus.
