Rilke beginnt 1904 in Rom mit der Arbeit an seinem ersten und einzigen Roman, den er 1910 in Paris vollendet. Er selbst spricht stets von seinem Prosabuch und in der Tat unterscheidet sich der Text formal radikal von dem seinerzeit �blichen Roman. Das fiktive Tagebuch besteht aus kaum verbundenen Prosagedichten, die Maltes Grunderfahrungen und Reflektionen zu den existentiellen Themen Tod, Angst und Verzweiflung, aber auch Sprache, Identit�t und Liebe verarbeiten, ohne eine kontinuierliche Handlung zu verfolgen.
