Publisher's Synopsis
This series was a joint project of the South African council for the Deaf and the Human Sciences Research Council. The way in which deaf communication in South Africa has developed separately in the different languages made such a series of dictionaries essential. The five books contain signs for 3,000 words. There are 500 signs in each book and many words are represented in no fewer than twelve sign languages, all clearly illustrated. The words were selected by the Deaf commmunity itself, which reflects the variances between twelve main regional, cultural, and social groups. These twelve groups are: Tswana (OFS) ; North Sotho (Northern Transvaal); Sotho (Soweto); Zula (Natal); Indian (Transvaal); English (Natal); Afrikaans (Transvaal); Afrikaans (Cape); English (Cape); Afrikaans (Cape "Coloured") and signs used by the Department of Education and Training. The Dictionaries are fully illustrated with complete descriptions for each sign and comprehensive indexes in English, Afrikaans, Zulu and Southern Sotho.
