The base set of the "Dictionary of Scientific Biography" was published serially in 16 volumes between 1970 and 1980. Volume 15 is Supplement I and Volume 16 is the comprehensive index volume. In 1981 the 16-volume set was reissued, with no alterations to the text, in 8 double volumes known as Vol. 1+2, Vol. 3+4 etc. This base set included more than 5,000 scientists from antiquity to the mid 1960's. Only deceased subjets are included.;The new supplement adds more than 600 prominent scientists who died from the mid-1960's to the late 1970's. These are the men and women who developed the theories that have so drastically transformed life - and death - in the last 40 to 50 years, the great figures in ecology, genetics, quantum physics, molecular biology, set theory, general relativity, biochemistry, planetary science, nuclear physics...
