Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Dictionary of American Biography: Index; Volumes 1-20
Early in the publication of the twenty volumes of the Dictionary of American Biography it became evident that an analytical index must be compiled if the wealth of the Dictionary was to be made available for refer ence.* The task of compiling an index of this scope has been great, and the problems have been complicated, but the compilers have rendered patient and devoted service to the end that all subjects in the entire set might be classified and arranged so as to give the Dictionary its maximum usefulness. The index, in its broadest sense, is an epitome of our national life in all its varied aspects and the compilers have kept constantly in mind this body of factual evidence.
