Then there was General Texier, an old comrade of my father's, who still calls me ma petite, one of those simple brave men who will die as he has lived, a gentleman. It is not necessary to describe such people, they are so upright. Nor is it neces sary to speak of Madame Texier. She has grown so enormous that it incommodes her to move or to think. Besides, she always agrees with my General. It grieved me to have him take Sides against me, to hear him appeal to my father's memory with real tears in those great eyes of his, which look so honestly from under his big white eyebrows. But I am not so sure my father would agree with him. It is one of those things I am dying to ask him.
