Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Devout Exercises of the Heart, in Meditation and Soliloquy, Prayer and Praise

She assumed the poetical name of Philomela, [the nightingale] under which her productions were ushered into the world; whether by her own choice, or at the instance of her friends, as a compliment to her merit, cannot be ascertained. From her known modesty the latter seems most probable and that desiring her name might be concealed, the appellation of t'lomela was sub stituted for it, ashappily allusive to the mellifiu ous strains of her poetry, which bear a resem blance to the plaintive notes of the nightingale, according to the description of the great Milton.
