This revised manual, updated from the previous edition, aims to be the principal reference of contemporary practice for the design of municipal wastewater treatment plants. The manual is written for design professionals familiar with wastewater treatment concepts, the design process, plant operations, and the regulatory basis of water pollution control. It focuses on current plant design practices of wastewater engineering professionals, augmented by performance information from several thousand treatment plants. This three-volume manual consists of 24 chapters. Chapter 1 presents a brief historical overview of significant developments that have shaped the design of municipal wastewater treatment plants. Chapter 2 discusses design as a responsibility shared by several concerned entities and the variables that influence cost. Chapter 3 discusses opportunities for cost-effectiveness of an overall design. Chapters 4 through 8 present basic subjects of site selection and plant layout, plant hydraulics and wastewater pumping, occupational health and safety, support systems, and construction materials. Chapters 9 through 19 discuss unit processes in the liquid-processing train.;Chapters 20 and 21 address thickening and dewatering technologies while chapter 22 includes complete treatment of biological and chemical stabilization. Chapters 23 and 24 cover thermal processing and the ultimate disposal of residuals, respectively. Published standards for specific design and loading criteria are referenced throughout this manual.
