Publisher's Synopsis
The WannaCry Ransomware attack was a cyberattack on May 12, 2017, by the WannaCry ransomware crypto-worm. It attacked computers based on the Microsoft Windows System by encrypting their data and asking for ransoms through one of the most popular and widely used cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin. It asked for 300$ worth of Bitcoins to decrypt the computer's data. More than 200,000 computers in over 150 countries were under attack. Some victims of this widespread ransomware were Honda, Nissan, FedEx, and the UK's National Health Service(NHS).
The project aims to perform a thorough static as well as dynamic analysis of the WannaCry ransomware in an attempt to identify its behavior, propagation vectors, encryption methods, and how it affects compromised systems. The analysis entails running the ransomware in a virtual environment to track its interaction with the operating system, network, and other program components.
