Publisher's Synopsis
A small number of Germans came to New France and mixed with the French-Canadians. However, the first major round of German immigration to Canada began after the British conquest of Nova Scotia. In Saskatchewan, the German settlers came directly from Russia and the Dakotas. They formed compact Deutsch-speaking communities around their Catholic and Lutheran churches. They established villages on the prairies in a 40-mile-wide tract east of Regina. Resources were scarce. One young lady made a big fortune by learning to bake $20,000 worth gooseberry pies in one small iron skillet. This book is dedicated to all creative, resourceful and hardworking people who built the northwest of Canada.
