Welckers Darstellung, an welche ich mich nat�rlich zunachst wandte, versagte fiir beides: ersteres war ihm zu der Zeit, als er seinen Aufsatz f�r die von ihm herausgegebne Zeitschrift f�r Ge schichte und Auslegung der alten Kunst' schrieb, nicht m�glich, letzteres war von ihm als nicht im Kreise seiner Aufgabe liegend bei Seite gelassen. Gerhard hat zur Erg�nzung des Welcker'schen Standpunktes hierin nichts getan, und Preller hat in seinem sehr verdienstlichen Buche 'demeter und Persephone' die arch�ologische Frage von seiner Forschung ganz ausgeschlossen. So ergab sichals erste Aufgabe, an die Quellen selbst zu gehen: sowol den Denkm�lervorrat so weit als m�glich zu durchmustern als auch die Litteratur von Homer bis zum Untergange des Heidentums, so weit sie in Frage zu kommen schien, zu durchsuchen. Beides habe ich getan und hoffe, wenn ich auch nicht zu behaupten wage, dass ich kein Denkmal und Zeugnis des Raubes ausgelassen habe, doch alle wichtigen und belangreichen herangezogen zu haben.
