Gustav von moser, the author of Der takes much the same place in German dramatic literature that Labiche does in that of France. His work is sponta meous, evidently written without effort, very uneven, seldom with any deep insight into character. Even the best of his plays do not touch great problems nor rouse serious thoughts, but yet, and perhaps for this very reason, they have long been favorites with the average German audience, and they are certainly excellently fitted to make a foreigner's early steps in German pleasant as well as profitable.
